24-25 Budget Appeal Form

    SIPA is required to establish a cost of attendance (COA) that reflects a moderate standard of living in the New York area for the nine-month academic year. However, students may encounter educational expenses not covered by the standard COA, such as the purchase of a personal computer or unreimbursed medical costs incurred during the academic year.

    To address these additional expenses, students can request a review of their individual budget for potential adjustments to their COA. To request a budget adjustment, complete this application and submit with receipts and any relevant supporting documentation (e.g., a letter from an impartial third-party provider). Requests for budget adjustments are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and additional supporting documents may be required depending on the nature of the requested increase.

    Please note that the following expenses will not be considered for budget increases: consumer debt (e.g., credit card bills or other prior debts), summer expenses or costs incurred during periods of non-enrollment, and other discretionary expenditures (e.g., car payments, car insurance, entertainment, and other non-educational expenses), as federal law prohibits the school from providing aid for these items.

    Below are the standard Cost of Attendance budget items for education-related and living expenses for students for the 2024-25 Academic year.

    RENT

    If your costs significantly exceed the estimated budgeted amounts above, please provide the required documentation to support your claim. The fields below indicate the thresholds for the main budget items that we can review, along with the appropriate documentation needed for a budget adjustment request.

    Rent

     

    Apartment Type: Studio, 1BR, 2BR, 3BR
    Do you share living expenses with others?

    *Attach a complete and fully executed copy of your rental agreement. Please provide proof of rent payments. Not to exceed $2581 per month.

    Medical & Dental Care

    Documentation is required for medical expenses which are not covered by insurance. Documentation must:

    • Be from a medical provider (third party).
    • Provide the amounts of the medical expenses.
    • Indicate whether the medical expenses are covered by health insurance.
    • Indicate that the medical expenses occurred or will occur within the current academic year; and
    • Indicate that the procedures are medically necessary (not elective or cosmetic).

    Child Care 

    Required Documentation & information needed:

    • Verification that the student has a dependent included in their household.
    • Evidence of necessary care enabling the student to attend school.
    • Proof of dependent child care expenses incurred or anticipated, up to $1,637 per month.
    • Copies of the childcare contract and payment proofs (e.g., canceled checks).

    Computer Purchase

    Computer expenses up to $2000. Including tax, hardware, and software. Attach a copy of your invoice of the computer purchase with taxes. Computer purchases either during periods of enrollment or 60 days prior to the start of the term. 

    Dependent Care

    • For dependents, proof of payments up to $1,000 per month for a spouse or $500 per month for other non-spouse dependents.
    • Names and ages of dependents.

    Disability & service animals

     

    For students with a documented disability, the cost of attendance (COA) calculation may include an allowance for expenses directly related to the student’s disability. Eligible expenses may cover items such as specialized services, personal assistance, service animals, transportation, equipment, and supplies, provided these costs are necessary, reasonable, and not covered by other agencies.
